Fuel costs

Help with fuel costs

Conflict overseas has increased fuel prices and put pressure on Australia’s fuel supply. The Australian Government is working with states and territories, industry and international partners under the National Fuel Security Plan.

The Plan supports a reliable fuel supply, including measures to help with fuel costs.

The fuel excise has been temporarily reduced until 2 August 2026 to help lower fuel prices. The fuel excise is a tax you normally pay when you buy petrol or diesel. There are also temporary changes affecting some businesses, including those using heavy vehicles.

Find fuel-saving tips and learn about the National Fuel Security Plan and government actions on the FuelPlan.gov.au website.

Read about the ATO fuel response on the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) website.
