Digital ID

Find out about Digital ID and how to set it up and use it with your myGov account.

What is a Digital ID?

A Digital ID is a secure and easy way to prove who you are online. You can create your Digital ID, such as myID, using Australian identity documents like your driver's licence and your passport.

Find out more information about Digital ID on the Digital ID website.

myID is different to myGov

myGov

myGov is a simple and secure way to access government services online in one place.

You can use either the myGov website or the myGov app to access your account.

myID

myID is the Australian Government’s Digital ID app which allows you to prove who you are when accessing government online services. You can choose to connect your myID to your myGov account.

In November 2024, myGovID changed it’s name to myID. You can continue to use your myGovID app to access government online services. Find out more about the change from myGovID to myID and what it means for you on the myID website.

Set up myID

Set up your myID in 3 steps.

  1. Download the myID app from the App Store or Google Play.
  2. Open the app and follow the prompts to enter your details – full name, date of birth and a personal email address.
  3. Choose the identity strength required. You need:
    • at least a Standard identity strength to sign in to your myGov account, or to create a new myGov account using Digital ID
    • a Strong identity strength to link Centrelink to a myGov account and recover access to your myGov account if you can’t sign in using your myGov sign in details and second sign in option (codes sent by SMS or answer a secret question).

Find out more on how to set up your myID and identity strength on the myID website.
