Getting help to conceive

If you need fertility treatment or IVF, you may be able to claim money back from Medicare.

Medicare and fertility treatments

How much you get back from Medicare depends on:

  • the treatment and services you need
  • how much your doctor charges
  • if you have private health insurance.

You may be able to get more money back through Medicare Safety Nets. You can get this when you spend over a certain amount on medical services in a calendar year.

Make sure you talk to your clinic and insurer to find out what the costs are, what you’ll get back and how much you need to pay.

Mental health support

Trying to conceive can be an emotional time, and you need to make sure you’re looking after yourself.

Medicare may cover some costs for up to 10 sessions with a mental health professional. Speak to your GP about a mental health treatment plan to access mental health services at a lower cost. Find out more about mental health care and Medicare on the Services Australia website.
