Use the myGov Code Generator app
The myGov Code Generator app is no longer available to download from app stores. You can now connect other authenticators to your myGov account.
If you currently use the myGov Code Generator app, you'll be prompted through the Security review feature in your myGov account to switch to a more secure sign in method or another authenticator.
If you already have the app, you can continue using it for now. The myGov Code Generator app will be retired.
You can change your multifactor authentication option to use a code by SMS or use an authenticator.
Remove the myGov Code Generator app
Follow these steps to remove the myGov Code Generator:
- Sign in to your myGov account.
- From the My account drop down menu, select Account settings.
- From Sign in settings go to Authenticator and select Manage.
- From the Authenticator page, select Remove on the myGov Code Generator app.
Set up a back up multifactor authentication option
If you already have the myGov Code Generator app, we recommend you set up a multifactor authentication back up option. You can use your back up option if when you can’t use your myGov Code Generator app.

If you’re travelling overseas
To sign in with a code from the myGov Code Generator app while you’re overseas, you’ll need to do all of these:
- make sure the app is already downloaded to the mobile device you’ll use while you’re overseas
- change your multifactor authentication option to the myGov Code Generator app in your myGov account settings on the myGov website
- make sure you set up code sent by SMS as your back up multifactor authentication option in your myGov account settings.
When you add SMS codes as a back up multifactor authentication option, the mobile number must be an Australian mobile number. You also need to be using this number while you’re overseas so you can get the SMS.
