How to spot a myGov scam

How to tell if it’s myGov contacting you or a scam.

Find examples of myGov scams on the Services Australia website.

Scams are made to look genuine. Scammers want you to open a link, reply or give out personal information. It’s important you don’t reply. Make sure you think twice before opening a link in any message.

Contact can include emails, text messages, phone calls, social media messages, advertisements or websites claiming to be myGov.

Take a moment to stop and check any communication. This can help protect your account security.

Contact from myGov

When myGov contacts you, they’ll:

  • only ask you to sign in to myGov using the official app or by entering my.gov.au in your browser
  • never ask you to reply with your personal information or myGov sign in details
  • be about actions taken on your account like signing in or changing your details.

Contact from a scammer

There may be signs a message, email or phone call is a scam. Scam contact may include:

  • sending you a link or attachment
  • asking for your myGov sign in details like your username, password or multifactor authentication code
  • asking for your personal information such as your bank details
  • asking you to pay money
  • using urgent language to pressure you to act.
