Get or find your tax file number
Your tax file number (TFN) is a personal reference number you use for tax and superannuation.
You should get a TFN if you want to do any of these things:
- get a job
- apply for government benefits
- get an Australian business number (ABN).

How to apply for a TFN
There are different ways to apply for a TFN depending on your circumstances. Find out more about how to apply for a TFN on the Australian Tax Office (ATO) website.
How to find your TFN
- Sign in to myGov.
- Select Australian Taxation Office from your linked services.
- Select Find my TFN.
Your TFN will be shown with your personal details.

If you don’t have a myGov account
If you don’t have a myGov account, follow the steps to create one.
When you’ve created one, you can link the ATO to your account.
