Get or find your tax file number

Your tax file number (TFN) is a personal reference number you use for tax and superannuation.

You should get a TFN if you want to do any of these things:

  • get a job
  • apply for government benefits
  • get an Australian business number (ABN).

It’s free to apply.

How to apply for a TFN

There are different ways to apply for a TFN depending on your circumstances. Find out more about how to apply for a TFN on the Australian Tax Office (ATO) website.

How to find your TFN

  1. Sign in to myGov.
  2. Select Australian Taxation Office from your linked services.
  3. Select Find my TFN.

Your TFN will be shown with your personal details.

Learn about the other ways to find your TFN on the ATO website.

If you don’t have a myGov account
