Centrelink payments
Check if you can get a Centrelink payment to help with the cost of raising your child. You may get:
- Family Tax Benefit if you earn under the income limit
- Parenting Payment if you’re a young child’s main carer.
If your child has disability or a medical condition, you may be eligible for government support for carers.

Your child’s health and development
Regular checks with a Child and Family Health Nurse or doctor can help track your child’s development.

If you're concerned about your child's development or if they have disability, you may get help through the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS).
Early childhood partners can help if you have a child younger than 6 with developmental delay, or younger than 9 with disability. They can connect you to supports and services and help you apply to the NDIS.

How to get a hearing assessment
Your GP can refer you for a hearing test or to access government funded hearing services.

When to seek help through the NDIS
If your child has been diagnosed with permanent hearing loss, you may get help from the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS).

Preschool
Preschool may be referred to as kindergarten in your state or territory. It’s the year before your child starts full-time school.
