Link Medicare
Before you link Medicare to your myGov account
Find your Medicare card details, including your card number and individual reference number, if you have them. You’ll have Medicare card details if you’ve enrolled in Medicare in the past. If you haven’t enrolled, find out how to enrol on the Services Australia website.
You’ll need a myGov account. If you don’t have a myGov account, you’ll need to create one.
While linking Medicare to your myGov account, you’ll need to answer some questions based on information provided to Medicare in the past.
How to link Medicare to your myGov account
There are 3 ways to link Medicare to your myGov account.
You’ll need to create a Digital ID or use an existing one. If you don’t have a Digital ID, you can create one while you link Centrelink .
Find out about Digital ID and what you need to create one on the myID website.
The email address you use for your Digital ID must be the same as your myGov email address.
While linking Medicare to your myGov account, you’ll need to answer some questions based on information provided to Medicare in the past.
Follow these steps:
- Sign in to myGov.
- Select View and link services.
- Select Link on the Medicare tile.
- Consent to myGov storing your personal details or review your myGov profile details.
- Read and acknowledge the privacy and your personal information message, select Next.
- Select Yes to Do you have or know your Medicare card and Individual Reference Number (IRN)?
- Select No to Do you have a linking code? then select Next.
- Select Get started in the Digital ID (Recommended) box and follow the prompts.

You’ll need the mobile phone number or email address registered with Medicare to get a one-time passcode.
If you don’t have access to a mobile phone number or email address registered with Medicare you’ll need an identity document such as your:
- Australian birth certificate
- current Australian driver licence
- Australian passport
- Australian citizenship certificate
- visa details
- ImmiCard issued by Department of Home Affairs
- Australian marriage certificate
- Australian change of name certificate.
While linking Medicare to your myGov account, you’ll need to answer some questions based on information provided to Medicare in the past.

- Sign in to myGov.
- Select View and link services.
- Select Link on the Medicare tile.
- Consent to myGov storing your personal details or review your myGov profile details.
- Read and acknowledge the privacy and your personal information message, select Next.
- Select Yes to Do you have or know your Medicare card and Individual Reference Number?
- Select No to Do you have a linking code? Select Next.
- Select Get Started in the Using my Medicare card and Individual Reference Number box and follow the prompts.

- Select View and link services.
- Select Link on the Medicare tile.
- Consent to myGov storing your personal details or review your myGov profile details.
- Read and acknowledge the privacy and your personal information message, select Next.
- Select Yes to Do you have or know your Medicare card and Individual Reference Number (IRN)?
- Select Yes to Do you have a linking code? Select Next.
- Select Get started in the Linking code box and follow the prompts.

What you can do when you link
When you link Medicare to your myGov account you can:
- make a claim
- add or remove someone from your Medicare card
- update your personal details
- view your claim history and statements.
If you're unable to link
If you can’t link a service to your myGov account, contact the service for help.
