Create a myGov account

Before you create a myGov account

To create a myGov account, you must have either:

• a personal email address that only you can access
• a Digital Identity.

When you create a myGov account using email, we’ll ask you to create a strong password and set up multifactor authentication (MFA) to protect your account.

Your myGov account must have a unique email address. This means the same email can’t be used for two myGov accounts.

How to create a myGov account

Using email to create a myGov account

1. Go to myGov and select Create account.
2. Select Continue with email then select Get started.
3. Read and agree to the Terms of use and myGov privacy notice and select Next.
4. Enter an email address and select Next, then enter the code sent to your email followed by Next.
5. Enter your mobile number and select Next, then enter the SMS code sent to your mobile followed by Next.  If you don’t enter a mobile number, we’ll send notifications to your email address.
6. Select your notification option and select Next.
7. Create your myGov password and select Next.                
8. Select a multifactor authentication option only you can access and follow the prompts.
9. Select 3 secret questions and enter the answers to finish creating your account.

If you can’t create a myGov account, you’ll need to contact your service directly.

Multifactor authentication options

You need to select an MFA option to create a myGov account. We recommend you set up MFA on a device only you can access. Find out more about MFA options including passkeys, an authenticator and codes sent by SMS.

Using a Digital ID to create a myGov account

You can also create a myGov account using your Digital ID.

This lets you securely sign in and verify your identity through your chosen Digital ID provider.

After you’ve created your myGov account, you can start linking your government services, like Centrelink, Medicare and the Australian Taxation Office (ATO).
